About

this is portfolio of Katy Chung

an interaction designer and recent graduate from the University of Dundee. I have a background in design and computing which puts me in a position where I understand both worlds. I believe design should be simple, useful and usable.

Degree show over

The degree show is now officially over and graduation is looming. I received a first class BSc honours degree which I am very very pleased with! Currently having a short and well deserved break and coming to terms with the fact that I'm no longer a student. From here on, everything is exciting and somewhat frightening!

Everything starts again on the 7th of June when we start working towards exhibiting at New Designers (in early July).

Dates

Degree show 6 - 9pm, 21st May preview

Graduation 2:30pm, 24th June

New Designers on the 8 - 11th July @ the Business Design Centre, Islington, London.

2010, start again

Yet another re-design. This time round though, the site is powered by Drupal after having spent several months using it for my degree project, it was quite easy for me to put this together. I must confess I cheated a little - most of the main content is static, I think this is a fair compromise as most of the content is not likely to change very much. I felt it was time for an update since my time as a student is almost up...and I was *really* tired with the old design :(

Currently working on...

Newly graduated - looking for work!

In the meantime I am keeping myself busy with some freelance work for a start-up.

Previous works...

Exhibition space

Moving on from the degree show, we were left with a colour scheme that we carried over to the New Designers exhibition in London (July 2010).

Reflecting on the design of our degree show space and how we presented ourselves visually. We re-designed our exhibition space using the same colour scheme but this time...with cubes.

The cubes were designed so that they nested within (compact + modular) each other so that we could transport them in our modest sized van (and having to share with the product designers!) from Dundee to London.

Considering our limited time and resources. The re-design of the space and the postcards better reflected us and also to show that we can work in a team.

Graphics/Visual identity

Postcards for New Designers, designed in a couple of days after some brainstorming with the team.

Photographs were shot in RAW format then edited in Photoshop, layout in Adobe Indesign.

user scenario - hinting at cultural differences and different time + place

Pangram

People - A social networking site for reviving and preserving minority languages. The site is based on research and personal experience.

Design - Language is a culturally sensitive matter and so I tried my best to keep the design and aesthetics as neutral and as simple as possible.

Technology - Built on open source content management system (CMS) Drupal, theme custom built.

Dissertation

I recently wrote a dissertation on the birth of true democracy through the Internet? (Available upon request)

Everybody

A solo (and spanning one semester) 3rd year project experimenting with Processing, PHP, MySQL, HTML and CSS.

You type in an [anonymous] altruistic message, messages are stored and over time; projected onto a surface for passers-by to view.

This project involved learning Processing (open source IDE, using Java) from scratch and getting it to talk to MySQL. I am by no way a programmer but understand the fundamentals of object orientated programming but consider myself comfortable with code. The idea stemmed from two areas; the Postsecret website and Japanese religion Shinto and how they would hang anonymous prayers/wishes in shrines where the Kami (Gods) supposedly read them. This project was important to me because it was challenging, and I know that if I had the time to develop further, could have been a really playful idea..

Objects for Grandpeople

A 2nd year, Microsoft sponsored brief.

Working in a team of four, two product designers, and two interaction designers we worked together to create the Networked bowl based on "quantitative user research, but qualitative, based on the idiosyncracies of your grandpeople as individuals, not as stereotypes."

In working with one of the team members (Andrew) grandparent (Frances) we discovered that she had an interest in baking, the problem that Andrew and Frances had however was that they did not see each other too often as they lived quite far apart and if Andrew wanted a recipe, Frances would offer a vague description of the recipe, for example instead of giving a precise amount, she might have said "a pinch of...". Our resolution was a networked bowl (two objects, one with microphone to allow Frances to give Andrew instructions and the other object for Andrew...). Frances's object captured and measured the ingredients whilst she baked. Andrew's object, a bowl which had an indicator displaying the right level of ingredients to use.

Par Avion

A 2nd year brief that asked us to create a service that would work seamlessly across various devices.

Par Avion is a service for frequent flyers; providing them with real time flight information using technologies such as multi-touch and SMS to engage with users.

Quiet Zone

A 1st year group project exploring soundscapes.

"A Quiet Zone is a space you define as a soundscape which should be protected. It's a place you enjoy for its sonic environment."

Working in a team of 5.

I realise this is a really bad montage. Please see my Flickr instead.
