Design Style

Being inspired on a global level, Chung's personal style in terms of designing goods can be defined as very diverse. Within this broad design spectrum, she particularly enjoys designing modern and contemporary pieces. Her work hints of mid-modern century and Scandinavian lifestyle, with ergonomics and comfort in mind.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Katy Chung grew up in a diverse and international environment that mainly focuses in the creative and manufacturing industries. Pursuing fine art at school throughout her childhood years, and growing up apprenticing with her parents with their work with home goods factories, she was deeply inspired to pursue her career in designing goods to improve homes. In 2016, Chung moved to USA and started studying at Savannah College of Art and Design, majoring in Furniture Design and minoring in Package Design.

Anything impacts everything.

Being in factories was a large part of Katy's childhood. During her school breaks and on weekends, Katy spent her time in factories, observing the factory lines out of curiosity and anything interesting that caught the child's eye. As she grew older, she started doing quality management and administration work as means to earn money. As the years went on, her parents gradually gravitated towards global outsourcing, between Western countries and Asian countries. As a result, Katy also started attending overseas business trips to visit factories and companies during her free time. The immersion in the manufacturing industry and business environment played a large part in Katy's personal growth.

Education was a large factor in the development of Katy's character. Since a young age, Katy studied in international schools that promoted well rounded education. She first studied at Japanese International School and HKMA David Li Kwok Po College in Hong Kong, and graduated with a high school degree in Fine Arts and Business. She then went on to pursue her Bachelor of Arts degree in Furniture and Packaging Design at Savannah College of Art and Design in the United States of America. Being trilingual, Katy is fluent in Cantonese, English and Mandarin. Growing up and being immersed in the culture of interacting with people of different ethnicities of a daily basis, she appreciates and finds different cultures fascinating and intriguing to learn about. She is currently learning the beautiful Korean language as a hobby.

Disciplinary Training

The Hong Kong Air Cadet Corps helped Katy realize the importance of structure. At a mere age of 12, Katy joined the HKACC after growing an interest in aviation and airplanes. What she did know was that the HKACC was a lot more than just learning how to fly in the air, but that it also taught Katy how to 'fly' within one's mind. Through the meetings and activities such as all-day hikes, camps, and military training, she gradually developed a strong core and mindset. She started out as a recruit cadet, and advanced to a corporal within 5 years.

Katy has been traveling even before she was born. When she was merely a fetus, her parents travelled to Germany for a business trip. The trip triggered her love of eating bread and rich stews, and all cuisines in general. All jokes aside, Katy is very well travelled. Living by the life quote "Work Hard, Play Hard", she makes sure that she works extra hard to gain time to 'play'. She loves traveling and has been to most countries in Asia, such as Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and China. Moving to the United States of America to pursue her bachelors degree, she has also started exploring the different states of the country. Recently, in the summer of 2018, she drove from Savannah, Georgia to San Francisco, California in the span of 18 days, stopping by and visiting sites in 11 states.

Other than designing and traveling, Katy likes to use her time to enrich her life through other means. Through the gardening club at her university, she found the joy of natural dye-ing using flowers and has made products out of naturally dyed cloth. Other than that, she also finds playing musical instruments very relaxing. She is well versed in piano, and is proficient in flute and recorder. Recently, she has also taken a liking in ceramics and pottery and is taking classes to improve her skill in wheel throwing.
